• New guide lists accessible shops, parks and venues across Waltham Forest
• Guide aims to give disabled people more choice and help them live more independently
Work to ensure Waltham Forest is as disabilityfriendly as possible in the run-up to the 2012 Games has led to the launch of a new Disability Access Guide, which includes more than 1000 venues across the borough.
Working in partnership with award-winning disability organisation Disabled Go, Waltham Forest Council has complied an accessibility guide to locations – including parks, leisure centres, high street shops, Council buildings, restaurants and plenty more besides – that are accessible to those with disabilities.
The online guide enables people to find out whether venues have adapted toilets or parking close by, as well as specific details such as whether there are tactile or Braille markings in lifts or on doors, the positioning of fixtures and fittings, and whether you can request large print or Braille information or use sign language when speaking to staff.
The guide, which was launched at an event at the Disability Resource Centre on Tuesday 7 September, will benefit disabled people and will also be useful to carers, family and friends, parents with children, older people and visitors to Waltham Forest.
Cllr Marie Pye, Cabinet Member for Housing and Development, told Waltham Forest News: “I am excited about the production of this guide which will be invaluable for residents and visitors to Waltham Forest.
“As a host borough for the 2012 Olympics, the eyes of the world will be upon us and it is important that we do all we can to help visitors and residents to find and access
the places they want to go.”
Cathy Selby, who helped produce the guide said: “I wanted to make a difference and help others get the information they needed to go to places without worrying about steps and slopes or whether there was an adapted and accessible toilet nearby.
